Best Neighborhoods in Austin + Where to Live

If you’re moving and trying to find the perfect apartment in this new city, you should try to become familiar with what are the best neighborhoods to live in.

Austin, Texas, is a beautiful oasis in the Lone Star State, more like a slice of California without the high taxes. There are areas that are classically classy and traditionally Texan, with big mansions and towering trees, and others that are much more hip and cool, with bike lanes and gourmet food trucks. No matter where you’re looking to live, though, the best Austin neighborhoods are likely the ones that are keeping it weird.

Here’s a basic breakdown of the most popular places to live.

Downtown

Do you want to live in the epicenter of everything? Go with Downtown, where you’ll be more likely to have a smaller commute and perhaps even be able to ditch your car.

With a lot of biking advocacy in the area and decent weather most times of the year, it’s not a bad option. In years past, more people worked here than lived here. Now, many condos are being built, and it’s slowly becoming a more popular district to live in.

Unfortunately, it’s not one of the best neighborhoods in Austin, TX, for rent prices, as you’ll pay the highest rent in the area (an average of $1,870 per month as of 2015).

This is the spot for cool people. It also happens to be one of the most gay-friendly parts of the city. As a newly gentrified area, this is now considered to be the hip neighborhood in Austin, TX.
